# Hermes Grocy MCP
A Linux desktop stdio MCP server written in Rust. Connect Hermes to your self-hosted Grocy using its API, with the private profile in your selected desktop wallet. Inventory and other reads return actual JSON in both text and structured MCP results. Writes return the upstream receipt and a bounded readback where available.
| Household area | Capabilities |
| --- | --- |
| Stock | Products, barcodes, locations, groups, units/conversions; add, consume, open, transfer, inventory, entry editing, copy/merge, history and supported undo |
| Shopping | Lists, items, quantities, notes, stores, missing/due-product additions, clearing and JSON export |
| Recipes and meals | Recipes, ingredients, nesting, fulfillment, consumption, copies, meal plans and sections |
| Household work | Chores and executions, tasks and completion, batteries and charge cycles; supported undo and record edits |
| Equipment and custom data | Equipment, household custom fields/entities/objects and their values |
| Files and dates | Known household API files, bounded binary upload/download/delete, iCalendar export |
Full access includes deletion. `setup --read-only` omits mutation tools and enforces read-only access again at the HTTP boundary. Account administration, API keys, sessions, configuration secrets, external lookups, sharing and printer endpoints are excluded. See [coverage](docs/api-coverage.md) and [tested compatibility](docs/compatibility.md).
## Get started
Requires a current stable Rust toolchain, a Linux desktop session with a compatible Secret Service wallet, and libsecret/GLib. KWallet and GNOME Keyring use their existing default wallet; setup recommends the provider for your desktop. A separate wallet-manager GUI is only needed to change/unlock its password.
Build prerequisites (choose your distribution):
```sh
# Arch Linux
sudo pacman -S --needed base-devel pkgconf libsecret glib2
# Debian / Ubuntu
sudo apt install build-essential pkg-config libsecret-1-dev libglib2.0-dev
# Fedora
sudo dnf install gcc pkgconf-pkg-config libsecret-devel glib2-devel
```
In this repository:
```sh
cargo install --path . --locked
hermes-grocy-mcp setup
```
Setup explains how to create a dedicated Grocy user and API key, asks for an address and hidden key, guides wallet protection, checks only the API, and adds a credential-free Hermes entry using its preserving configuration writer. Unlock the selected wallet before starting Hermes. In Hermes, run `/reload-mcp` or start a new session, then try:
> Use grocy to list my stock. Do not change anything.
Follow the [setup guide](docs/setup.md) for account permissions, 2FA, Authelia, custom certificates, retries and manual registration. Do not put your API key in environment variables, command arguments, YAML or a `.env` file. None of those credential-loading mechanisms are supported.
## Security and privacy
All requests remain under the enrolled HTTPS `/api` prefix, including setup, files and exports. Deployment prefixes work. Redirects, ambient proxies, automatic request retries and compressed responses are disabled; TLS verification stays enabled. Input/response limits are enforced. MCP tools cannot supply a destination, header or host filesystem path.
The full private profile is stored as one wallet item. Only the profile label/provider identity are kept in restricted local preferences; the Hermes entry contains no key or server address. Application-to-wallet communication requires the encrypted Secret Service session. Setup distinguishes detected, unverified and unsafe storage; its explicit unsafe override can permit an unprotected wallet, never plaintext IPC.
A write with `UNKNOWN_WRITE_OUTCOME` may already have happened. Inspect current state and history before another write; do not retry it automatically. A completed write with `verification: incomplete` also must not be repeated just because its readback failed. Writes are serialized within one process; Grocy does not provide general conditional revisions across clients.
Returned household data can be retained by Hermes or its model provider. Read the [security policy and limits](SECURITY.md) before enrolling a real key.
## Development
```sh
cargo fmt --check
cargo clippy --all-targets --locked -- -D warnings
cargo test --locked
cargo build --release --locked
```
Tests additionally need `openssl`, `dbus-daemon` and Python 3. The focused suite covers destination/TLS limits, isolated wallet policy, catalog validation, MCP data, write outcomes, files and setup. The Docker contract is explicit and uses only disposable synthetic data:
```sh
python3 scripts/docker_fixture.py start --state /tmp/grocy-mcp-contract
python3 scripts/docker_fixture.py test --state /tmp/grocy-mcp-contract
python3 scripts/docker_fixture.py stop --state /tmp/grocy-mcp-contract
```
Choose a fresh state directory outside the repository. Run `stop` even when a test fails. The runner removes only its labeled container, network and volume; it never prunes unrelated resources. Fixture bootstrap may visit the disposable UI for migrations. Every MCP call is tested behind a proxy that permits only root/prefixed API paths.
AGPL-3.0-only. See [LICENSE](LICENSE). Third-party dependencies retain their own licenses.

# Security policy and limits
This project handles a Grocy API key and household data. Report a suspected vulnerability privately to the repository owner's security contact or private vulnerability-reporting facility when available; do not include a live key or household export in a public issue. Revoke an exposed key in Grocy immediately. There is no claim of a professional or independent security audit.
## Boundaries
- One enrolled HTTPS origin and deployment-aware `/api` prefix. Only finite reviewed routes are exposed. No arbitrary HTTP requests, redirects, frontend scraping, external product lookups or MCP filesystem access.
- Verified TLS, optional locally selected PEM CA, no insecure TLS flag. Ambient proxy variables are ignored. Explicit literal loopback HTTP is a development enrollment option only.
- No server listener: local stdio MCP. Raw input frames are bounded to 12 MiB; ordinary tool arguments/JSON/text responses to 2 MiB; decoded API files to 8 MiB. File groups/names are constrained and encoded as required by Grocy. Compressed API responses are refused.
- The selected desktop provider's executable identity is checked on each secret operation, then the operation binds to its unique D-Bus owner. A restart/change cannot redirect an in-flight operation to another owner. No silent provider fallback, wallet creation/unlock or unrelated secret reads.
- Maintained libsecret performs the encrypted Secret Service exchange. Its encrypted session algorithm is checked before accessing a profile. The protocol's standardized 1024-bit DH session is not a claim of modern transport strength against privileged local attackers; this is a desktop IPC boundary, not an Internet transport.
- The private profile (address, key, metadata and options) is one wallet secret. Preferences are atomically written with mode 0600 in an owned mode-0700 directory and contain only provider identity/profile label. Generated Hermes entries contain no credentials or address. Enrollment does not accept credentials from arguments, environment or files.
- Wallet storage evidence is conservative. GNOME file-header evidence is not a complete protection audit. KWallet cannot prove a non-empty password through this mechanism; setup gives native steps and requires an acknowledgment or a default-off unsafe override. **The override may persist plaintext inside the wallet. It never relaxes encrypted IPC.**
- Read-only policy is checked in tool discovery, validation and HTTP dispatch. Full access deliberately permits household deletion and undo; server user permissions still apply. Definitions and values of account custom fields are not exposed.
## Mutation semantics
Preflight checks validate record existence, explicit IDs and unit conversions. Ambiguous names return candidates. Quantities are converted with checked decimal arithmetic. Changing a stock unit uses Grocy's database cascade only after a positive unambiguous conversion exists. Products must have the same stock unit before merging; a record cannot merge with itself.
Grocy has no general ETag/conditional revision guarantee. A mutex serializes mutations in one MCP process, but another process, browser or API client can change state between a preflight and write. Stock-entry edits preserve omitted fields from a preflight read and have this same race limitation. `verification: confirmed` means the readback was obtained (or file bytes/deletion absence confirmed); it is not a cross-client atomicity guarantee.
The HTTP client never retries requests. A connection interruption, server failure or cancellation after possible dispatch yields `UNKNOWN_WRITE_OUTCOME`, with target identifiers for inspection. Do not repeat automatically. Once the server returns a valid success, a later readback failure is `completed` with `verification: incomplete`. Empty successful receipts remain empty; recipe consumption's undo identifiers must be found in stock history, with care around concurrent activity.
Grocy can run its own configured automation, constraints, cascades and hooks when household data changes. Excluding printer endpoints does not disable server-side policies configured by the Grocy administrator. Review those policies and the dedicated user's permissions.
## Privacy and host assumptions
The MCP does not log requests, raw upstream errors, keys, private profile contents or household responses. Errors use fixed public messages. It does not maintain a household database/cache or telemetry. The wallet's public item attributes include an application identifier and your nonsecret profile label. The local Hermes command/path and provider identity remain visible to your user.
Secrets necessarily enter process memory. Application-owned key and serialization buffers are zeroized where practical; TLS, JSON, GLib/library allocations, OS memory, swap and core dumps are not comprehensively erased. This does not protect against root, a compromised desktop user, a malicious selected wallet, an untrusted Hermes executable, malicious dependencies or a compromised Grocy server. Keep the host and wallet updated, use disk/swap protection and restrict debugging/core dumps according to your needs.
Household text is untrusted data, not an instruction to change configuration or fetch external links. Grocy file bytes are returned as bounded MCP images/resources, with image signature checks; they are not executed or written to host paths by the server. The consuming client may render/store them. Hermes history and remote model providers may retain all returned household content: their data policies are separate from this MCP's storage policy.
The shipped credential backend targets Linux desktop Secret Service. There is no headless plaintext fallback or Windows/macOS backend. Dependency advisories are a point-in-time check; keep reviewing updates and the lockfile. Compatibility and actual verification evidence are documented in [docs/compatibility.md](docs/compatibility.md).

## Household entity inventory
Use `records_describe` for required creation fields, then `records_list`/`records_lookup` to find explicit IDs. `records_create`, `records_update` and `records_delete` are limited to editable entities. `userfields_get`/`userfields_update` read/change defined household values. For a custom object use `entity: userobjects` and its object ID; the MCP resolves its custom entity from the stored definition. Define its fields against `userentity-<name>` after creating that household entity. Account custom-field definitions are filtered from reads and cannot be mutated. For stock batch values, pass the numeric entry row ID plus an exact `stock_transaction_id` from a purchase/inventory-correction/entry-edit receipt or history. Grocy inserts these fields via transactions; reads resolve the batch ID automatically. A transaction spanning other batch IDs is refused.

## Named upstream operations
All routes below are relative to the enrolled API base. Local descriptions/validation and credential loading do not make HTTP requests. Generic record tools use `/objects/{entity}` or `/objects/{entity}/{id}`; custom values use `/userfields/{entity}/{id}`. An unavailable server route/record returns `NOT_FOUND`, rejected inputs/permissions return sanitized errors, and an interrupted mutation can return `UNKNOWN_WRITE_OUTCOME`.

File groups: `equipmentmanuals`, `recipepictures`, `productpictures`, `userfiles`; avatars are excluded. Stock log/history views remain read-only, while supported booking/transaction undo has named action tools. Recipe-derived shopping additions use Grocy's API default list; the endpoint has no explicit list selector. This server does not invent one.
## Explicit exclusions
No arbitrary API request tool. No system configuration/user-settings secrets, API-key/session/permission administration, user/account mutation, public sharing-link routes, barcode external lookup, printer/webhook endpoints or attachments outside `/api`. Assignment labels are the only account projection. Server-configured hooks can still run as part of Grocy's own household policies.
The catalog covers the reviewed household API surface, not undocumented plugins, server internals, database maintenance, filesystem or orphan-file enumeration. The Docker contract exercises a meaningful scenario per domain; it does not claim every possible parameter combination or server-version behavior has been tested.

# Compatibility and verification
Baseline: **Grocy 4.7.1**, Linux desktop, official Rust MCP SDK (`rmcp` 1.8.0 resolved in Cargo.lock). Household field definitions were reviewed from that release's database schema and API specification because its OpenAPI omits several schemas and mislabels some numeric path IDs. No assumption is made that future server fields are safely editable: update the catalog deliberately.
The disposable contract pins the LinuxServer image:
```
lscr.io/linuxserver/grocy@sha256:3c1ce96cb2d0f0c7ea0c2e0b89f5769be7f2f102204fbeef87aeef56afd6036e
```
The scenario uses actual MCP SDK discovery/calls and synthetic credentials supplied only by test code. A frontend-blocking proxy accepts `/api/…` and `/household/api/…`; setup/doctor and workflows made zero requests outside those prefixes. It covers product/unit/location creation and updates, real inventory, stock-entry editing, opening/transfer/consumption/transaction undo, inventory, conversion and stock-unit cascade, shopping add/remove/clear/export, recipe ingredients/nesting/copy/consumption/undo, meal plans/sections, chore execution/undo, task completion/undo/rescheduling, battery charging/undo, equipment/custom definitions/custom-entity and stock-batch values, account-definition read/write exclusion, a PDF upload/readback/download/delete, iCalendar export, record deletion and read-only rejection.
The small default suite separately checks malformed/traversing destinations, real self-signed TLS rejection, redirects, compression/size caps, interrupted write without replay, plaintext Secret Service refusal against isolated D-Bus, provider identity mismatch, preference ownership/modes/symlinks, field/quantity/name validation, required conversion preflight, MCP result equivalence/annotations, grouped results, successful writes with failed readback, file bytes and setup cancellation/recovery/configuration preservation. The actual desktop wallet's encrypted success path and interactive real enrollment require local use; synthetic tests do not claim to have enrolled a real wallet or household account.
Final delivery checks use formatting, Clippy with warnings denied, the focused tests, the explicit Docker contract and a release build. The one-time RustSec check against the current advisory database found no reported vulnerable locked dependency (290 dependencies, 2026-10-01). This is a time-specific advisory result, not proof of absence of vulnerabilities.
## Practical limits
- Other Grocy versions may reject individual routes/fields or need migration. Errors are explicit; no frontend fallback or fabricated writes are performed. Broad server permissions may be required for custom-field/entity administration even when ordinary household actions are allowed.
- Readback confirms a retrieved state, not an atomic conditional revision. Grocy can compact stock entries and change their IDs; an entry readback can become unavailable after a successful edit.
- Recipe consumption returns HTTP 204 and can consume only available ingredients. The MCP reports the empty receipt honestly. Read stock-log records to identify the precise transaction before undo; do not guess during concurrent writes.
- Files require their known group/filename (from records/custom fields). Grocy has no API to enumerate orphan files. The MCP has no host-path or remote-URL import interface.
- Unpaginated upstream endpoints must fit the 2 MiB complete-response bound before local paging. Very large households may need future server-side filtering support. Generic list tools use server pagination where supported; their metadata indicates whether another page exists.
- The private profile contains enrollment metadata samples (up to 100 IDs/names for locations/units/lists, with bounded name lengths); these are setup defaults, not an authoritative live cache. Tool calls read live data.
- Encrypted IPC and provider binding have been tested negatively with an isolated incompatible service. KWallet storage-password strength remains a user/native-manager check. See the setup and security documents.

Date: 2026-10-01. Status: written design approved; implementation plan in preparation. Date: 2026-10-01. Status: approved design implemented; compatibility and limits are documented in the public guides.
## Agreed outcome ## Agreed outcome
Build a lightweight Rust stdio MCP for a self-hosted Grocy instance. Hermes must receive useful data and support full household reads and writes: creation, updates, deletion, and domain actions. Credentials and private connection information belong in the selected desktop wallet. Setup must work for a person without an LLM. Every MCP request to Grocy, including enrollment and diagnostics, goes through its API. Test against a disposable local Docker instance, not an existing household or the public demo. Maintain a clean AGPL-3.0-only repository using the contributor's existing public Git identity, without assistant attribution or personal artifacts. The conversational direction and this written design are approved. The implementation plan is the remaining architectural review checkpoint. No further preference questions are needed to define the first release. The design and implementation plan were approved. The first release follows the scope below; concrete compatibility evidence is recorded in docs/compatibility.md.
